Hi Char; Welcome to the world of dealer smoke and mirrors! You have just experienced an excellent reason for asking experienced riders instead of know everything (think they do) dealer mechanics. I have the same model, '99, and there is no such thing as "counter-balance rattle" inherent in the machine. Yes, you will have vibration (mild) at certain rpm and there may be some loose parts that need attention, but this is nothing new to any other motorcycle I have ever owned. Go over the bike, tighten up, ride and enjoy. Frank
